How does this work?
We supply and configure firewalls which support VPN by default. These can be configured to allow remote users, or remote networks, to connect to your network as if they were local to the network. All traffic over the Internet is passed through a secure tunnel which cannot be broken into.
Once the VPN is established, the user can then, depending on the speed of the Internet connection, open documents or run applications as if they were on the network, or, more usually, open up a remote desktop session onto a spare machine at the practice.
How does this compare to GoToMyPC, LogMeIn, Splashtop and similar?
Whilst you can use these products, they require not only an ongoing subscription, but involve connecting via a third party. Once set up, the VPN is entirely free, and it involves no third party company in order to operate; all your traffic goes directly between the remote user and your network.
